Election Debate for Internationals
This March, Groningen goes to the polls and internationals have a voice. If you’re an EU citizen registered in the municipality or if you have legally resided in the Netherlands for five years, you have the right to vote in the municipal elections. Yet for many internationals and students, local politics can feel distant or inaccessible. That’s exactly what this debate aims to change.
Groningen wouldn’t be Groningen without its students and international community. At the same time, the next city council will face urgent challenges that directly affect you: a housing crisis that shows little sign of easing, growing pressure on student life, and questions about how welcoming the city remains for internationals amid cuts to English-taught programs.
After a brief and accessible introduction to how municipal elections work, candidates from 9 out of 10 major political parties will take the stage. They’ll share their visions for Groningen in short pitches before engaging in a true town hall format: answering questions directly from the audience on the issues that matter most to you. In the final round, each candidate will have just one minute to convince you why they deserve your vote.
This election town hall is in collaboration with SIB, ESN, SOG, Lijst Calimero, GIB and Forum Groningen. Whether you’re planning to vote or simply want to understand the choices shaping Groningen’s future, this is your chance to be informed, heard, and involved.
Come ask, listen, challenge — and make your voice count.

Protestival
Student activism in Groningen, ‘70 & now
You're young and you want to speak out against abuses. Where do you begin? 55 years ago, student activists asked themselves the same question, leading to the founding of the Groningen Student Union (GSb). In 1971, they campaigned for a better position for students, against climate change, and for international solidarity. How does the political youth culture of that time compare to today's? And what's on the agendas of student activists today?
The book launch of Nait Soez’n – De Groninger Studentenbond in jaren zeventig – en wat daaraan vooraf ging will kick off this program. Afterwards, GSb alumni will engage in conversation with contemporary student activists. Researcher Rodrigo Gonzalez Alvarez and human rights lawyer Jelle Klaas will talk about queer activism and the right to protest. You can also make a political zine, give traditional protest songs a modern twist, and listen to live music. Or talk to political student organizations and browse the mini-market for books and merchandise!
Speakers: Rodrigo González Álvarez, Zola Westerhof, Jelle Klaas a.o.
Protestival is a collaboration between Studium Generale, Groninger Studentenbond and Usva.
Het programma start om 19.30 uur. De inloop is vanaf 19.00 uur
